HMIS and hospital operations glossary
The terms hospital owners, administrators and ER teams in India hear most, defined in plain language.
- HMIS
- Hospital Management Information System: software that runs a hospital's day-to-day operations, such as registration, billing, wards, pharmacy and reporting.
- UHID
- Unique Health Identification number: the ID a hospital assigns so one patient's visits, bills and records stay linked.
- OPD
- Outpatient department: patients who are seen and leave the same day without admission.
- IPD
- Inpatient department: patients admitted to a bed, from admission to discharge.
- ADT
- Admission, discharge and transfer: the workflow that tracks where an admitted patient is and moves them through the hospital.
- Charge capture
- Recording every billable service, medicine and consumable against the patient so it appears on the final bill.
- Discharge clearance
- The sign-offs (clinical, nursing, pharmacy, billing and insurance) needed before a patient can leave.
- Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY
- India's government health assurance scheme, providing cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for hospitalisation at empanelled hospitals.
- TPA
- Third-party administrator: a company that processes health-insurance claims between insurers and hospitals.
- ABDM
- Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission: the national programme building India's digital health infrastructure, including the ABHA health ID.
- NABH
- National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers: India's hospital quality accreditation body.
- DPDP Act
- Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023: India's law on how personal data, including health data, is collected and processed.
- ACLS ambulance
- An ambulance equipped and staffed for Advanced Cardiac Life Support, used for critical patients.
- Pre-arrival handoff
- Information an ambulance crew sends to the receiving emergency department before arrival, so the right team is ready at the door.
